WWF: Norilsk Nickel new fuel spill shows systemic safety problem
MOSCOW, Jul 13 (PRIME) -- A jet kerosene spill on a facility of affiliate of metals producer Norilsk Nickel is less harmful than the oil product leakage in May but demonstrates a systemic risk management problem, Alexei Knizhnikov, head of the business environment responsibility of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), said on Monday.
A pipeline of Norilsktransgaz, unit of Norilsk Nickel, lost pressure on May 12 and spilled more than 44 tonnes of fuel.
Knizhnikov said, "In this case, the scale of the accident and how fast it is mitigated is no longer important, a systemic problem with accidents is seen. The business must firstly stem the problem in the bud, solve the problems, but we seeing a third accident in a month."
The official said that besides a fuel spill of May, the Talnakh ore-dressing plant contaminated the environment by dumping wastewater.
